$19 - $23/hr

Position Summary

Purpose
The primary purpose of this position is to provide a broad range of services and support to students ages sixteen through twenty-four enrolled in the Gateway to College (GtC) program. This position develops and maintains strong relationships with students and promotes student success, and is responsible for designing and implementing recruitment and retention strategies, maintains student files and records, monitors student course schedules, provides academic and career supports, and coaches students on areas such as balancing life and school, and goal setting to support their academic and personal success.

Scope
To design and deliver workshops on topics such as (but not limited to): time management, developing college level classroom habits, studying and test-taking strategies, accessing campus and community resources; actively collaborates with the GtC staff and other teams to identify and use innovative and engaging practices; builds a consistent programmatic culture to encourage student success, and to continually improve the GtC program, and utilizes a strengths-based approach to connect and engage with students.

Dimension of Job
The GtC program serves young people at risk of not completing high school or who have stopped out of high school. The program gives students the opportunity to earn a high school diploma while transitioning to a college campus and earning college credit. Students succeed in an educational setting with the support of the program’s caring team and student support specialists who each possess experience and commitment to supporting under-served youth. In their first year, students take classes in a learning community as the foundation for their matriculation into college-level coursework. The GtC program changes lives and helps youth to reinvent themselves and improve their futures. The GtC program is part of a nationwide network of college partners implementing Gateway to College as an initiative under the Achieve the Dream network.

Supervisory Responsibility:
There are no supervisory responsibilities, but may serve as a formal work group leader for assigned staff, instructors, and students.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, human services, and/or related field.
  2. Three (3) years of professional experience working with underserved students and/or diverse populations.
  3. Demonstrated experience in successfully coaching, building positive relationships, motivating and supporting under-prepared and culturally diverse young people.
  4. Experience assessing student needs and coordinating culturally competent educational and community-based services.
  5. Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with diverse colleagues and partners.
  6. Possess knowledge of current research-based interventions with under-prepared students
  7. Must possess good organizational skills and be able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  8. Ability to appropriately use and demonstrate proficiency at the Basic level of MS Word and Excel, including web-based software and resources.
  9. Strong customer service skills to effectively address the needs of students, customers, faculty, staff and the general public.
  10. Ability to maintain confidentiality on all information regarding student, staff, and faculty communications and personal information.
  11. Ability to work with accuracy with minimum supervision.
  12. Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  13. Willing to take accountability for and ownership of work, job and office operations; dependable and reliable.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree in related field from an accredited institution or an equivalent mix of related education and experience that demonstrates competency requirements for this position
  2. Experience managing a caseload and case files
  3. Experience in community outreach and partnership development; knowledge of local social service systems
  4. Experience with curriculum development, alignment and integration and outcomes assessment
  5. Experience teaching college success and/or career readiness course
  6. Experience and interest in alternative instructional methods, including innovative use of technology for learning and instruction.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  1. Must be able to work at a desk for long periods of time and operate a computer workstation and telephone.
  2. Must be able to communicate both in person and over the telephone with a variety of people each day.
  3. Occasionally carries and moves light loads up to (25 lbs.)
  4. The minimum reasoning skills necessary for this position include the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where standardization does not exist.

Work Schedule

  1. In addition to regular business hours, the person in this position must be able to be flexible around the needs of the department, which includes evening and/or weekend hours, and local/regional travel.
  2. Significant local travel-may coordinate programs at multiple sites throughout the college services area.
