Essential Job Duties

The Research Scholar will engage in research in support of USDA APHIS PPQ S&T and CIPM research activities to conduct plant pest risk assessments and spatial analyses to build robust plant safeguarding continuum systems to protect U.S. agriculture and natural resources. The main duties of this position include reviewing literature, analyzing pests, and developing statistical models to understand spread, establishment, and the potential impacts caused by exotic invasive species. These statistical analyses support developing pest forecast models to manage exotic invasive species efficiently and effectively by providing critical pest information in a timely manner. Research Scholar must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and will be required to work closely with others in a team environment.

The primary duties and responsibilities include
  • Design risk assessment approaches to understand the impact of exotic species in the United States
  • Conduct literature review on exotic species
  • Prepare risk assessments to understand the potential economical and environmental impacts of exotic species
  • Review and improve existing analytical models to evaluate exotic pests
  • Develop statistical models to evaluate the probability of exotic species establishment
  • Develop statistical models to identify the potential spread of exotic species
  • Develop analytical models to simulate crops and pests to evaluate climate change impacts
  • Lead and conduct complex research activities
  • Contribute writing peer-reviewed journal articles as a lead author
  • Communicate research results with stakeholders 
  • Work closely with various PPQ teams to understand the research needs and design research methods to solve problems
