The Counseling Center assists NC State students experiencing personal, academic or vocational problems. The goal of the Counseling Center is to provide students with professional counseling services and outreach to help them cope with issues that may impede successful academic performance.

The Counseling Center also offers crisis intervention and psychological/psychiatric assessment as well as consultation with others who have concerns about the mental/emotional state of NC State students. Our services are primarily short-term in nature and we make referrals to other helping professionals and community agencies as appropriate.

Essential Job Duties

This position will provide professional individual and group counseling services and outreach to NC State students as well as consultation to University administrators, staff and others who have concerns about the mental/emotional status of NC State students. The staff member will be embedded within the academic college to primarily serve students of that college, consult and build relationships with faculty and gain an understanding of the unique needs of the population served.

This position will assist in all areas of Counseling Center functioning including:
  • Provide individual and group counseling of NC State students/clients (personal, academic, and vocational assessment and counseling); psychological assessment; developmental and crisis counseling; couples counseling; evaluation of students for withdrawal from the University
  • Develop and participate in outreach programming, hold lets talk drop in spaces
  • Consult with faculty staff, parents, and others
  • Provide evaluations and recommendations regarding students with academic and conduct problems
  • Participate in after hours “on call” and possible evening office hours
  • General administrative responsibilities

This position is “at will.” Further, this position is currently funded with non-recurring funding and subject to continuation contingent on ongoing availability of funds.

Other Responsibilities

  • This position may involve participation in supervision/training of graduate students and program evaluation
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree required and a doctorate preferred in psychology, counseling, or clinical social work or closely-related field.
  • Appropriate licensure must be obtained/maintained according to NC laws.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Established commitment to culturally informed and responsive services
  • Strong clinical skills
  • Experience in handling crisis situations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a college/university counseling center
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within a large mental health services agency
  • Previous work with electronic records and scheduling, preferably Titanium
  • Experience in risk assessment
  • Ability to provide clinical supervision

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

  • Must meet all state law requirements for licensure in mental health discipline
